Beltane Ranch is an idyllic historic property sat on a hillside in the heart of Sonoma surrounded by its own vineyards, orchards and kitchen gardens.
The Atmosphere at Beltane Ranch
The original ranch that still stands today was built in 1892 by Mary Ellen Pleasant, the daughter of slaves and a flamboyant entrepreneur in the early days of San Francisco. Her roots can be seen in the New Orleans style architecture of the ranch with the rooms opening out onto large wrap around balconies. The ranch is still very much family run and walking into the bustling kitchen it’s not unusual to find three generations of the family that have owned Beltane Ranch since 1936.
The location and surroundings are simply stunning. Near the pretty village of Glen Ellen, the handsome ranch building overlooks Sonoma’s Valley of the Moon, home to over 30 wineries. A winding oak-lined drive leads up to the ranch passing through rows of vines and the occasional grazing horse. Much of the produce used in the kitchen comes from their own gardens and the ranch itself is surrounded by flower beds, herbs and fruit trees.
Other than the many wineries that dot the valley, the ranch is also a short drive from the town of Sonoma itself with its historic plaza, excellent restaurants and numerous wine bars. Jack London State Park, former home of the adventurous author and a beautiful area to explore, is just up the road. For those wanting to experience the glitzier side of wine country in Napa, it’s a scenic thirty minute drive through the hills to Yountville.
Your Room at Beltane Ranch
There are five rooms in the main ranch each unique but all are pretty, light-filled and full of character. We recommend staying in the larger rooms at the front that open up on to the balcony with stunning valley views. If you’re looking for a little more privacy the two bedroom cottage in the garden behind the ranch is a great option.
