On this trip, you’ll discover ancient petroglyphs, feel awed by the vast scope of the Texas night sky, and discover unlikely pockets of modern architecture and art.
The Napa of the South
Days 1 & 2
Begin your adventure in Hill Country, a region of Texas known for its natural beauty and vineyards. Fredericksburg, “the Napa Valley of the South,” is a charming town with wineries and German architectural influences at every turn. Indulge in a private tasting at Pontotoc Vineyard, go on a hike, roam Wildseed Farm (the largest wildflower farm in the U.S.) or take a dip in a local swimming hole. You can spend the morning hiking for a beautiful view of Hill Country from Enchanted Rock and wind up enjoying some live music, a beer and a bit of dancing at the legendary Luckenbach post office in the evening. At the end of each fun-filled day, rest your head at the buzzy, newly opened Albert Hotel.The property is a blend of old and new Fredericksburg, with four original, historic buildings in addition to new construction providing a contemporary flavor.
Head West to Your Own Private Ranch
Days 3 & 4
Don your cowboy hat and point your faithful steed (your new Range Rover, of course) in the direction of the setting sun– it’s time to head west. You’ll spend the next two days enjoying Texan hospitality and wild adventures at Chalk Draw Ranch. Chalk Draw is a remote 20,000 acre private ranch adjacent to Big Bend National Park, including a Mexican hacienda-style guest house, a resort-worthy pool and star-gazing rooftop. The ranch is home to some of the most significant petroglyphs and pictographs from prehistoric native peoples in the region. You’ll have the entire ranch to yourselves, along with the ranch team (and a private chef!) to look after you.
Big Bend National Park
Days 5-7
Big Bend National Park is larger than the state of Rhode Island, sprawling over 1,252 square miles of desert, mountains, massive canyons and, of course, the Rio Grande. Willow House will be your conveniently-located and thoughtfully-designed basecamp for epic adventures throughout the park. Going both by water and by land, you’ll paddle through the echoing canyons of the Rio Grande on a canoe trip and explore the Chihuahuan Desert on UTVs.
Marfa: An Artistic Oasis
Days 8 & 9
Ever since New York artist Donald Judd fled to Marfa, this remote town has developed its reputation as a quaint haven for the arts in West Texas. Enjoy a private tour of the Chinati Foundation, home to Judd’s installations, and poke around town to discover the small art galleries, coffee shops and boutiques that make this eclectic town so fascinating. Wash down a famous prickly pear margarita from the Hotel Paisano before heading off to catch a glimpse of the Marfa mystery lights– a well documented yet unexplained phenomenon in the desert outside town. You’ll be well-placed to explore Marfa from your central location at Hotel Saint George, a contemporary and sophisticated stay. Under the guidance of an astronomer at the McDonald Observatory, take advantage of the dark West Texas skies with a night of unparalleled star-gazing.
