This historic guest ranch and resort in Arizona lets you channel your inner cowboy (or girl) while never slipping on the creature comforts.

The Atmosphere

You’ll soon forget that Tanque Verde Ranch is only half an hour from Tucson when you are in the saddle high in the mountains of Saguaro National Park. The ranch’s 60,000 acre backyard sits in the heart of the Sonoran Desert and is a stunning landscape that conjures images of the Old West with its huge namesake cacti and abundant desert wildlife.

Although Tanque Verde is as much a resort as it is a ranch, the atmosphere is refreshingly casual and it’s easy to see why so many of their guests return year after year. We met a family returning for their 50th straight year! This and their great children’s programs make it a fantastic place for a family holiday.

The riding program is exceptional and the horse-filled corrals form an idyllic centerpiece to the ranch. Whether you prefer a gentle walk or something more adventurous, expert wranglers are on hand to guide you.

If the saddling up doesn’t tempt you there are plenty of other activities at the ranch, from naturalist hikes and mountain biking to tennis and pool time. Tucson also has some stunning desert golf courses.

Your Room

Warm, inviting and decorated in a southwestern style, they combine a western feel with all the luxury bells and whistles. We loved the rooms with mountain views and, for a little more space, the private haciendas are the way to go.

Need to Know

Meals are all-inclusive at the ranch and on several days of each week there are traditional outdoor barbecues, picnics and of course the breakfast ride. Be sure to try one of the prickly pear margaritas at the Doghouse Saloon.
